CLUB CARES ABOUT ENVIRONMENT

Environmental conservation has always been a major mission of garden clubs. Solar pv is a major solution for protecting the environment against the damage brought on by burning fossil fuels.

CLUB MEMBER SPURS SOLAR NONPROFIT

In 2015, a WPGC member, Mary Dipboye, was instrumental in creating a statewide nonprofit that is helping Florida homeowners to access affordable solar pv for their homes.

The nonprofit is called Solar United Neighbors of Florida. https://www.solarunitedneighbors.org/florida/ Mary serves as a volunteer on the Advisory Board.

CLUB SUPPORTS SOLAR EDUCATION

The Winter Park Garden Club was the first garden club in Florida to sign on as a community partner with a solar co-operative(co-op) facilitated thru Solar United Neighbors. As a community partner, the Club publicizes the co-ops’ public education events and benefits to the surrounding community.

CLUB ADVOCATES FOR SOUND SOLAR POLICY

In addition, Club members advocated for sound state solar policies in 2016 when they supported Amendment 4 (removing tax burdens on commercial customers who installed solar) and helped to defeat Amendment 1(designed by utilities to enact barriers).

BOTTOM LINE: Support for solar pv and education on solar aligns with the Club’s mission to educate its members and the public on how to protect and conserve the environment.
