It is with a heavy heart to learn that millions of pounds of food is being intentionally destroyed as a direct result from the coronavirus pandemic. An article in the New York Times describes how difficult it has been for so many of our farms. The lockdown has forced so many restaurants and hotels, etc. to close that there are not enough businesses to purchase the half the crops.
According to an article on Trehugger.com, part of the problem is that the food distribution system is set-up primarily for bulk purchasing instead of smaller packaging for homes. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many families are eating at home significantly more than they used too.
One way we can help, is to first spread the word about the problem and second we can support or local farms by purchasing food directly from them. Here is a list of farms in central Florida on ClickOrlando.com so that you can find which farms are closet to you.
